Literary Elements Used In Maus - 1640 Words

Simon Wiesenthal states, â€Å"The Holocaust was not only a Jewish tragedy, but also a human tragedy.† The Holocaust was just a tragedy for all humanity. It brought a lot of people pain and suffering. When the Jews had to go through this they were doing what is best for their family and what is the best way to survive. I will be discussing what happens in Maus, the literary elements used, and current events that can relate to Maus. To continue, Maus is about Spiegelman interviewing his father. His father talks about the mid-1930s to the end of the Holocaust. His father had to go through a lot of hardship such as selling valuables and going to the extent of doing business in the black market. His father had to do whatever to keep the family†¦show more content†¦In Artie’s second book a Nazi shoulder states, â€Å"Halt or we’ll shoot,† (Spiegelman 266). The Nazis held the Jews captive and took them by the lake, so they could kill them very quickly, so the Americans didn’t see any evidence of what they do to the Jews. This is indefinitely an example of the Nazis being sneaky. The Jews were pounced around like mice throughout the Holocaust and butchered just like the cats do to mice. The Jewish Star is great example of symbolism in Maus, such as when Vladek is second guessing his decision. Vladek says, â€Å"Will I walk slow, they will take me†¦Will I run they can shoot me† (Spielman 82)! This shows that since he has the Jewish star on his jacket no matter what he does there is a consequence because he is Jewish. They couldn’t do anything to help themselves, but survival was very hard because of being labeled. It got them to the point of being beaten down by the Nazis and taken to the trains to be killed and work in concentration camps. It made the mood of the story make you feel the suffering for the Jews. My next literary element I am going to be talking about is mood. The mood is showed in many ways in Maus. Artie changed up on how the reader felt about the Holocaust and the way Artie and his father felt towards one another.
